MARVEL Hobbies and Crafts OH YA THIS IS FUN!

MARVEL Hobbies and Crafts

Oh, my oh my…… THIS is amazing  I listened to the tutorial which as I was listening to all that the MARVEL Hobbies and Crafts had to offer I… found myself saying REALLY is site has all this to offer!!! in disbelief.
I soon found out that this site should come with a warning !…”caution you will get lost in the shear joy of all this information at you fingertips! No more dusting off that quilt books you have put somewhere… No more buying expensive craft books. This is truly amazing and very addicting.”
I LOVE THIS ASSIGNMENT! I have only just begun to locate the tons of information here. I worked on this on Monday evening and did not realize the time  when I went to bed!
The first thing I looked up was knitting socks. There were around one hundred articles many with patterns about knitting socks. I could read them, search the articles and ones I wanted to go back to I can place in my own personal folder to have handy.  I can refine a search to focus in on a certain style or knitting technique.
I did an advanced search for Christmas stockings. There were no less than 10 pages of articles relating to Christmas stockings. The articles are loaded with photos and patterns to knit the socks.
I had difficulty figuring out how to find the list of magazine titles. I saw it on the tutorial. So I went to the HELP spot and found the information I needed. I did figure out how to find the list of magizines.
I like the snap back feature to go back to your original search .
Even someone that is not a trained professional librarian can find where get the best information.  The site is very user friendly. There is so much information on the site it will take a few time to get familiar with all the “in and outs of the site”
I REALY JUST WANT TO GET THIS BLOG POSTED SO I CAN JUST SEARCH AND SEARCH THIS SITE!
 I think I am addicted!

Newspaper Discoveries and Maine Memory Network

Discovery Exercise
The tutorial is amazing. I refer to this often to help me refresh myself on how to located things. I do not think I could do this class without this information.
2. Do a basic search on something of interest to you.
I have used the Maine Memory network before from digital images for my elementary art students to create historically correct drawings and paintings. For instance our third graders go to Norlands. When they arrive back they create a drawing of their experience. Through the Maine Memory Network I am able to have student see photos of their town or familiar places during the same time period. Their artwork has much more detail and richness due to the additional photos I am able to share with my students. We created a collage frame for their drawings of a variety of advertisements from the same time period.
I am happy to have a more direct way to find this information.
3. Save this search to perform again or create an alert which will let you know when something new is added that fits your search criteria.
I did a search of Winslow Homer. I was amazed at the varied information was especially about his new exhibit at the Portland Museum of art.
4. See what your Invitational cohort is discovering. Choose at least one other Invitational blog, read that person’s post (about this or a previous lesson), and comment on it. You may like to check each other’s blogs throughout the Invitational as you learn together.
I have several colleagues that are doing this class. It is interesting to hear all the different points of views and academic interests. There are twelve teachers doing the Marvelous Maine in our school district.
4. This is Maine Library Snapshot Week which makes it the perfect opportunity to report how many patrons/users/members you have helped find the information they need using this or any other MARVEL resource.  Blog about an experience you had showing a patron how to use MARVEL.
This part does not really pertain to me. I am going to check how other colleagues have handled this lesson. I did share in the waiting area of my dentist the really cool online class I was taking through MARVEL. They worked in the University of Maine system and where interested in taking the class as well. I think you should set up a patron discover Marvel course for the average user!

I watched the video on how to navigate Britannica online.
I registered with the Minerva libraries got in and started to search the Marvel website and it sent me back to the login page that I had already done.
Lesson 2a — Britannica School Edition Britannica School Edition offers four different sections.
Learning Zone – PreK-2
Elementary
Middle School High School
I was unable to login in! I will have to go back and try it again before Sunday.
Lesson 2c- Britannica Academic Edition
1. Using Britannica Academic Edition, search for information about a current event.
The current event I chose to read about was an article about Malala, Yousafzai the Pakistan girl that was shot by the Taliban. The article explained her condition, and why she was shot and where they were taking her.  She was shot due to her diary that she was writing and sharing with the BBC about her life under the Taliban. On the right had side of the article are extensions of the article that allow you to read more in depth about her life and struggles.
It was interesting that after I read the article about Malala there was an article about Malala on the evening news. The article on Marvel was more in-depth and frankly more interesting. It had more of personal touches and had many other viewpoints to explore. There was even a video of an interview she did for the BBC earlier in the year.
This is where I go lost. I tried to go back to find out where I started to do the next step the workspace thing and I go so lost. I could not get back to the article I started reading   about Malala from I could not find it at all!
3. Now, explore creating a workspace by clicking on the logo and returning to the homepage.  Tell us briefly how you might use the workspace at your institution.  I could not find this!!
Britannica Academic Edition I was thinking, before I got lost that this would be better that a classroom full of newspapers to find current events. The information that the Britannica is able to share is multi dimensional. The information shared in an article on the Academic Edition of the Britannica is in multi media orientated, in-depth and multisource. I think student would enjoy the variety of media that is represented.
This is the site I needed up in after following the original link to the BBC. It is an advertisement site for ipad apps and a downloaded version that you can purchase;
Discoveries:
1.    There is an surprising amount of information out there in a variety of reading levels and age levels
2.   There are videos integrated with the information given.
3.   You could spend several hours researching a topic and have a variety of source some primary and first hand information.
4.   Sometimes it is easy to get lost. I found the easiest way not to get lost is to toss” bread crumbs” along the way! BOOKMARKS! And go back to the beginning and start again.

Venture In to the digital library with out a Map!

A few days ago, I started this blog and started this online class.  I wanted to find out how intuitive finding ebooks and free kindle books at my local library would be. I have always been one to jump in the lake in Maine, so this should work: just to jump in!
Wrong! I tried to access kindle books at our local library. I got my library number and typed it on on the library page. I got in, but it was very frustrating and difficult to search for books.
A few days later tried again...this time I followed the directions that I had picked up at my local library and got in!
Yes, I proudly can now read a book on my ipad! Way cool!
Bringing and reading the directions does make the adventure easier and less frustrating!

Now on to assignment: Marvel searching!
Wow! Starting this blog took a bit of doing. I thought this would be easy! Well, I was not ready to travel into the world of blogging.  I soon found out that the following things needed to happen:
reimage my computer (that only took 3 hours and one kind tech guy),
sign up for gmail and finally get my password!
With all that done, I am now ready to venture into the unknown and mysterious world of blogging.
I am starting this blog in order to take an online class through the MARVELous Maine Invitational online library course. I thought it would be advantageous to learn what our Maine libraries had to offer to me as an Elementary Art teacher and my students!
So starts my adventure!
