Discovery Exercise: Week 10 assignment
Create a blog posting discussing the following questions and other observations you have about NetLibrary. All resources can be accessed via this alphabetical list. For best results when accessing NetLibrary from home, close all browser windows and open a new window. You should not need to type in your library barcode and password again.
- Do a search for a topic that interests you. Note the default search is “full text.” You may want to change the search to keyword. Review your findings and observations.
My family is thinking about getting a dog . We have looked at a few breeds of dogs and have decided on a German Shorthaired Pointer. I did a non fiction search and found no entries.
I decided to search art education. I found only a couple of books on art education . There are quite a few books on education in general. I looked at the book Careers In Art . The book is written for guidance educators or student looking into various art careers.
- Constitution Day is looming and several students need more material. Search NetLibrary and recommend some appropriate titles.
I did a search on EBSCHOST. and got a bunch of information. About other countries’ constitution . I could not find specific information on the constitution. I am confused are ebooks and NetLibrary the same thing. I get confused because I do not know the library jargon. and in the begining it is refered to as Ebooks and then later NetLibrary. Not sure what I am looking for and where I am looking is correct.
- A class is doing projects on Western history. They have exhausted the library’s print collection. In NetLibrary, click “Advanced Search.” In the Publisher box, type “Nebraska” or “Oklahoma.” Report your findings.
I typed in Nebraska in EbscoHost advance search space. I got a range of ebooks from WIndmills, Contempary Indian issues. to historic trails??? I will try again using Western history and Nebraska. Two books came up Westward the Immigrants : Italian Adventurers and Colonists in an Expanding America and Bipolar Disorders : A Guide to Helping Children & Adolescents. I am still not sure I am researching it correctly?
I went back and reread the assignment. I searched for Academic Search Complete got back to EBSCO HOST typed in Nebraska and Western history and got tons of varied informantion for immigration to sugar beet production.
In the end....I think I am very glad we have trained proffessionals that know how to help us wade through the mountains of information out there!
I, too, was not sure if what I was doing was right. I did get some normal results for the search and then some really obscure results. I agree that it is nice to have people out there to help us and direct us in the right direction. Great point Tammy!!
ReplyDeleteTammy,
ReplyDeleteI think I saw somewhere that the name had been changed from NetLibrary to eBook Collection. I agree that NetLibrary doesn't say much about what it is. EBook Collection is a much better name.
The Nebraska and Oklahoma were under publishers. I think that these are state or university publications. They have a great deal of really cool information on the westward movement, but also publish works in other areas, therefore the weird mix of results.
